Embalmers’ Conference
Senior Tobin Brothers Funerals Embalmer Jennifer Burge recently attended the annual AIE (Australian Institute of Embalming) Conference, in Adelaide.
Jennifer tells us that in attendance were embalmers from all states of Australia and some from overseas.
The AIE Conference is an excellent opportunity for embalmers to learn, not only from the presentations, but from each other about the different work environments and how we are all aiming to achieve the same results that leave a family with a positive memory picture of their loved one, or the confidence to know that their loved one is cared for with dignity and respect.
The education sessions at this year’s conference covered a range of topics which included learning about the importance of the safe removal of pacemakers and other implanted devices; hairdressing and cosmetic application; cultural dress and mortuary requirements for different ethnic and religious groups. We also learned about the importance of Caring for Yourself, and How to Speak to Grieving Families. Two of our sessions were hands on, where we were taught how to make foot and hand moulds; there were practical sessions on various types of suturing techniques and an informative session on the treatment of babies.
The Conference provides an opportunity for those in attendance to catch up with old friends and to make new ones and to enjoy the social events such as the official opening dinner on Thursday evening.
At this function, newly qualified students received their certificates and suppliers who sponsor the event and who display their products and equipment, both new and tried and true, are thanked.
The venue for Friday evening’s dinner was the Adelaide Zoo. This was a wonderful evening which I shall remember for excellent food, wine and the opportunity to be up close and personal with some of the beautiful birds and animals.
The theme for the closing dinner dance on Saturday evening was Saints and Sinners which saw some of my fellow embalmers turn up in some wonderful creative costumes .
The AIE Conference next year will take place at Coffs Harbour with local as well as international speakers and I am looking forward to it already.
